Abstract
This study aims to examine and analyze the preservation characteristics of cultural facilities among the successful renovation cases of various idle facilities in Korea, and to be used as a basis for planning cultural facilities through renovation of idle facilities in the future.This study presents a review and theoretical basis of previous studies on idle facilities, renovation, cultural facilities, and preservation, and based on this, selected and analyzed successful renovation cases of idle facilities in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, and Busan. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, the renovation of cultural facilities through the use of idle facilities has balanced historic values with modern needs through new construction, extensions, alterations, and partial preservation. Second, preservation in each case was linked to historicity, and the fusion of historic features with modern design techniques promoted cultural creativity. Third, some of the examples go beyond simply preserving existing buildings and serve to preserve the value of cultural heritage into the modern era.
