Abstract
The education of transportation safety for children is one of the important policy issues in many countries. The South Korean government has been establishing experiential facilities in many of the regions in South Korea for transportation safety education. In this context, the role of the transportation exhibition museums, where experiential child transportation safety education is provided, becomes more important. The purpose of this study is to study the facilities where comprehensive transportation culture-related experience is provided to children and the spaces or programs for children that are provided by such exhibition museums related to the modes of transportation in order to understand the current status of such children’s transportation exhibition museums, with a view to providing the future direction for the composition of the transportation exhibition museum for children and related experiential facilities to be built in South Korea in the future and their exhibitions. There is no dedicated children’s transportation exhibition museum in South Korea. For this reason, the researcher examined the cases of the children’s transportation exhibition museums operated as a part of transportation exhibition museums for all age groups and five experiential facilities which are more focused on experiential education rather than an exhibition to review how they are operated and their experiential exhibition programs. The result of the analysis for this study showed that the exhibition method for the transportation exhibition museums for children in South Korea, in most cases, combined exhibition and experiential programs, composed of the exhibitions of live objects, models, panels, and videos, joined by experiential programs. Some facilities with less physical/technological restrictions were found to be utilizing experiential exhibition types, such as 3D, 4D simulators or augmented reality simulators, etc. For the future development of children’s transportation exhibition museums, first, it would be necessary to secure dedicated experiential exhibition spaces for children; second, effective exhibition production strategies must be sought to overcome the limitations of field experience; and, third, continued efforts to study the contents for transportation culture experience and transportation safety education and train experts in these fields will be essential.
